SJSU - Digital Ambassador

About

Funded in part by an initial gift from Google's Education Research Unit in the fall of 2012, the CSU Digital Ambassador program is coordinated by the Chancellor's office and has three goals:

  1. University leadership: CSU Digital Ambassadors will serve as community liaisons representing the educational technology interests of faculty and students. The Digital Ambassador will establish a consistent feedback loop to triage issues voiced by faculty and students, and will participate in a quarterly meeting with the Chancellor’s Office to discuss solutions to common obstacles and highlight major milestones.
  2. Faculty engagement:The CSU Digital Ambassador will work with campus faculty to better equip and inform colleagues of ways to enhance traditional teaching methods. A variety of platform-agnostic scaling techniques may be deployed to extend principles of educational technology to emerging technologies or explore new uses for familiar ones.
  3. Student empowerment: As part of coursework or supplemental learning experiences, pre-service teachers will work with the campus ambassador to develop pedagogical artifacts for future classroom use. Encouraging independent investigation, ambassadors will guide students as they construct materials to inspire a deeper understanding of a subject and enhance student interest and engagement.

Learning chemistry is a universal endeavor that is addressed in a variety of settings and cultures and the availability of the Internet draws chemistry instructors and researchers even closer together.  We feel that this team is uniquely qualified to make innovative tools based on our diverse cultural backgrounds and complementary research expertise.

The Team
Digital Ambassador - Dr. Resa Kelly has considerable experience with the design and study of animations. She is an associate professor at San Jose State University and also teaches general chemistry students and pre-service science teachers.  http://www.sjsu.edu/people/resa.kelly/

Dr. Sarah Hansen who specializes in eye tracking research, teaches General Chemistry laboratory students at Columbia University, researches how students view chemistry information, and facilitates professional development for high school science teachers, will lead eye-tracking studies for this project. http://www.columbia.edu/cu/chemistry/staff-bios/hansen/staff.html

Dr. Villalta-Cerdas teaches General and Introductory Chemistry at CSU-Bakersfield. He has researched the nature of students’ explanations and brings expertise in how to approach independent and collaborative learning. He will assist with the development of critical questions and assessment items and will test the framework in naturalistic settings. http://avc-chemed.com

Dr. Sevil Akaygün of Boğaziçi University has considerable experience in the design and study of animations and works with pre-service teachers. She will serve as our Turkish collaborator. http://www.fed.boun.edu.tr/default.asp?MainId=3&SubMainId=6&SubMainId2=22&Op=Detail&Id=101
